What is Nevus?

What are the characteristics and causes of nevus?

Nevus are clusters of melanocytes, which are cells that contain the protein melanin, which gives your skin its color. In general, melanocytes are evenly distributed throughout the skin, but when a patch of skin contains a larger than normal concentration of melanocytes it becomes a nevus.

When is a nevus a sign of skin cancer?
When evaluating a nevus' potential to become cancerous, the following signs are examined:
– Asymmetry: Benign is symmetrical, cancerous is not symmetrical.
– Border: If it is benign, it has clearly defined borders, while if it is cancerous, it has irregular, blurry or ragged edges.
– Color: If it is benign, it has a uniform color, whereas if it is cancerous, it shows color changes with shades of brown, skin color, blue, black, red or white.
– Diameter: A healthy one should be no larger than the eraser on the top of a pencil.
– Change: Change in shape, size or color is important.
